Daly says time is right to move on

Tue, 2nd September 2014

Anthony Daly says the time was right to move on after six roller-coaster years as Dublin senior hurling manager.

During his time in the hotseat Anthony broke down many psychological barriers for Dublin hurling as they captured both NHL1 and a Leinster SHC after many barren decades.

“Six years is a long voyage with any intercounty team but they flew by because they were so enjoyable and the lads were so committed,” says Anthony.

“I just wanted to give myself as much time to make sure that I was doing the right thing, and just to sound the lads out about what they were feeling.

“That’s life – there’s a certain lifespan in everything and I think it’s the best move for everybody, for players and maybe management for a fresh approach to come in.

“There are still good players in there.”

The Dublin Senior Hurling squad would like to extend its best wishes and gratitude to Anthony Daly and his management team on their departure last night.

"In his six years in charge Anthony and his backroom team have helped steer our county to a period of unprecedented success in the modern era, winning our first league title since 1939, our first Leinster title in 52 years along with two appearances in All-Ireland semi-finals," reads a statement released on their behave from the GPA.

"While as a squad we were extremely disappointed with our exit from this summer’s campaign, Anthony has left the game in the capital in a far stronger state than when he arrived and has transformed the profile of hurling in Dublin.

"His attitude and positive influence on our development was always top class and his legacy, while embellished with titles, is also that he helped developed a real sense of self-belief in Dublin hurling which we know will serve the county well in the future."
