John O’Leary hosts Legends Tour this Saturday in Croke Park

Thu, 27th August 2015

He was one of the best goalkeepers to ever play Gaelic football and fans of John O’Leary will have the chance to look back on his career when he plays host to a Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour this Saturday, August 25 at 2pm. Being the eve of Dublin’s All-Ireland semi-final against Mayo, the former Dubs number one will also cast his eye over his county’s chances of reaching the decider against Kerry.

John played for Dublin’s seniors from 1980 all the way through to 1997 lining out seventy times in the championship in total. What’s more remarkable is that these were seventy consecutive championship appearances. During that time he won two All-Ireland senior titles.

In 1983 he was part of the famous ’12 Apostles’ who beat Galway in the decider despite having three players sent-off during the game. Then in 1995 John captained Dublin to win Sam Maguire for the first time in twelve years as they narrowly defeated Tyrone.

John’s haul of medals at senior inter-county level also includes eights Leinster championships and three National Football Leagues. At minor level he was an All-Ireland winner in 1979 while he also holds Railway Cup medals for Leinster and lined out for Ireland in the Compromise Rules Series against Australia. John is a five-time All-Star winner.

Speaking ahead of the Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tour John O’Leary said: “It was a privilege to pull on the Dublin jersey and something I always treasured. I suppose as a goalkeeper I was lucky enough to be very close to Hill 16 for a lot of my playing time and the feeling of hearing the Dublin supporters at such close proximity is something that is hard to explain. I really look forward to the tour on what is a huge weekend for Dublin football”.

All Bord Gáis Energy Legends Tours include a trip to the GAA Museum, which is home to many exclusive exhibits, including the official GAA Hall of Fame and the new GAA Dynasties exhibition. Advance online booking for John O’Leary’s tour is essential as it is sure to sell out quickly.
