Assured Kilmacud Crokes Claim Victory Over Whitehall Colmcille

Finnian Donohoe struck a brace of first half goals at a rain-soaked O’Toole Park on Saturday evening as Kilmacud Crokes delivered an assured performance on their way to making it four wins from four in this year’s PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Hurling Championship Group 1.

Ably-assisted by the likes of Oisin O’Rorke, Dara Purcell and Caolan Conway over the course of the play, Donohoe played his part in ensuring Crokes maintained their 100% record in the 2026 championship. They are now set to round out Group 1 with a tussle in Parnell Park on September 12 against defending champions Na Fianna, who have also recorded four victories on the bounce in the top-tier competition.

Despite the best efforts of Paddy Spellacy and Dublin senior footballer Cormac Costello, Whitehall came off second best to their well-drilled Stillorgan counterparts. This result leaves them with one win from their four games to date, but the northsiders remain in contention for a knockout spot heading into a final round group meeting with Erin’s Isle at Parnell Park on Friday, September 11.

Crokes had overcome Isles in O’Toole Park a fortnight earlier and while the wet conditions made life difficult for both sets of players, the seven-time champions hit the ground running in clinical style. After Dara Purcell had knocked over the opening point of the tie, wing-back Conal Ó Riain and O’Rorke (free) also split the posts to offer Crokes an early platform.

Matters became even rosier for the southsiders when Donohoe gathered possession in the sixth minute, turned sharply and proceeded to race away before producing a calm finish beyond the reach of Ronan Murray. Less than 60 seconds later, the elusive Donohoe was in for a second goal as he secured the ball in a dangerous area and drilled into the bottom left-hand corner of the Whitehall net.

Whereas their Collins Avenue opponents were struggling to get going, Crokes continued to attack with great purpose – as evidenced by additional points from Dara Purcell and midfielder Brian Hayes. Whitehall finally opened their account when Spellacy fired over an 11th minute point from a tight left-hand angle, but Crokes immediately responded with a successful free from O’Rorke.

Although full-forward O’Rorke registered another brace of place ball scores inside the second quarter, Whitehall replied on both occasions with points of their own from defender Shane Dunphy and the reliable Spellacy.

Costello also bagged his first of the game on 24 minutes, but Crokes were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over either side of this effort through Conway and Dara Purcell. Spellacy’s dead-ball prowess yielded a further 0-2 salvo as the interval approached and they certainly were improving as the action wore on.

Yet Crokes remained firmly in the ascendancy and, thanks to additional contributions from the central attacking duo of Dara Purcell and O’Rorke (free), they brought a 2-12 to 0-6 buffer into the break.

Whitehall lined out for this game without the services of county star Eoghan O’Donnell, but they did get underway with just over a minute gone in the second period as Costello doubled his individual haul in fine style.

Spellacy also converted a free in response to a Cian Ó Cathasaigh point from play, only for Kilmacud to once again underline their credentials. In the space of just five minutes, Conway and O’Rorke grabbed two points apiece to leave Crokes in a commanding 2-17 to 0-8 lead on the stroke of 40 minutes.

This scoring sequence was interrupted by Spellacy’s fifth of the day, but with Kilmacud introducing their full compliment of five substitutes, they delivered a dominant display in the closing quarter at the Kimmage venue.

After Sean Purcell had struck over his first point of an industrious performance, Dublin senior hurler Brendan Kenny flicked to the net for a third Crokes goal on 48 minutes.

While they could have been forgiven for taking their foot off the gas at this juncture, Crokes continued to prosper amidst a heavy downpour in O’Toole Park. Supplementing a point from substitute Alex Hatt, Dara Purcell and Sean Purcell (who took over free-taking duties in the closing moments) added two more scores each to round off an impressive showing from Kilmacud.
