Basquel brothers power Boden to SFC1 victory over Na Fianna

BALLYBODEN ST ENDA’S 3-13 NA FIANNA 0-15

The Basquel brothers, Ryan and Collie, led the way for a dominant Ballyboden St Enda’s in this Dublin SFC1 quarter-final on Saturday evening.

They combined to score 3-7 for Boden’s tally as the Firhouse Road side, who are managed by former Kildare star Anthony Rainbow, impressed for most of the encounter before the Mobhi men rallied in the last 15 minutes.

The southsiders held the upperhand at centrefield where Michael Darragh Macauley, Declan O’Mahoney and Aran Waters dominated in the air to provide their forward line with the majority of possession.

Boden started as the meant to continue with Ryan Basquel firing over in the second minute.

The sides were level 0-4 each after 17th minute after a Conor McHugh point had brought the sides level.

But between then and the half-time interval Boden took control and by the break were 2-9 to 0-6.

Ryan Basquel fired the first goal in the 17th minute while seven minutes later young brother Collie raised a green flag after being picked out by a superb Conal Keaney pass.

Keaney them struck an impressive point with Collie Basquel making it 2-9 to 0-5 before Dublin U20 of this season, James Doran, got the final point of the opening half.

Three minutes into the second half Boden were awarded a penalty that Na Fianna strong challenge with Ryan Basquel successful from the spot.

By the 35th minute Boden had extended their lead to 3-11 to 0-7 before Na Fianna began to battle back.

Points from McHugh (two, one free), Seán Caffrey and Michael Deegan (two frees) made it 3-11 to 0-12.

Michael Darragh Macauley was then sent off (second yellow) and before the finish Boden defender Cathal Flaherty was also dismissed on a second card.

However, they had too strong a lead built up to be caught as they booked their semi-final spot.
