A dominant second-quarter display proved central as Ballyboden St Enda’s accounted for near neighbours St Jude’s by twelve points in their Go-Ahead Ireland Dublin Senior 1 Hurling Championship encounter at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon.
Leading by two points at the end of the first quarter, St Enda’s struck 1-8 without reply, including a goal by full-forward David Keogh, to pull 1-15 to 0-5 clear by the turnaround.
Despite St Jude’s becoming more resolute in the second-half, netting through John Carty, Boden’s supremacy was never truly in doubt despite the 52nd minute dismissal of Jack Lambert.
St Enda’s could and should have netted in the 2nd minute but St Jude’s goalkeeper Ross O’Reilly raced from his line superbly to block David Keogh in the act of shooting.
Conor Nolan opened the scoring at the opposite end a minute later and a lively start saw Boden’s Conor Dooley and Diarmaid McLoughlin of St Jude’s trade points in quick succession.
Ballyboden seized on a number of poor restarts to push ahead through points from John McGuire, James Madden and Fionn Murphy with an excellent Niall McMorrow score leaving them three points clear by the 10th minute.
While the lively McLoughlin clipped over his second score into the breeze two minutes later, his side came under increased pressure as they fell further behind following four points on the bounce by Darragh Kenny (free), Dooley (free) and a McMorrow brace.
Another sloppy puck-out caused further trouble for St Jude’s in the 21st minute as Madden intercepted an O’Reilly clearance and Keogh made no mistake on this occasion with a batted strike into the roof of the net.
The one-way traffic continued with temporary substitute Timmy Hammersley, Kenny (2) and Jack Lambert all enhancing the Boden tally before Callum Graham ended a barren period of sixteen minutes as he scored a fifth St Jude’s point.
Trailing by thirteen points at half-time, St Jude’s gained some encouragement through an excellent solo score by Ciaran Hogan in the 34th minute and a Nolan free helped partially nullify a brace of Kenny frees.
A goal was required to maintain any semblance of a competitive contest and it duly arrived in the 41st minute as substitute John Carty pulled to the net after Finn McGarry had parried a powerful Nolan shot.
Crucially, Ballyboden ended any pretensions of a comeback with Hammersley and Madden pointing in the early stages of the final quarter with Lambert’s deserved dismissal arriving too late to later the complexion of the game.
