Castleknock edge out Brigid’s in SFC1 derby duel

A Tommy McDaniel free in the fifth minute of added time eventually separated these Dublin 15 rivals in Saturday's Dublin SFC1 Group 4 contest at St Peregrine's, Blakestown Road,.

The sides were level on seven occasions over the course of the 60-plus minutes before Castleknock got the winner scores in the concluding moments with Seamus O'Carroll converting a 40-metre free to bring equality before sub McDaniel slotted the winner.

Castleknock topped Group 4 and advance to meet Thomas Davis in the quarter-finals with Kilmacud Crokes v Clontarf, Ballyboden St Enda's v Na Fianna, St Jude's v St Vincent's completing the last-eight tussles.

Castleknock started well with early points from Kevin Stephenson and Rob Shaw before a brace of Paddy Andrews scores brought the sides level, 0-2 each.

Points from Mal Tighe, Andrews and two from Philly Ryan had the Russell Park men 0-6 to 0-3 ahead before Castleknock scored four points in quick succession at the close of the opening half having gone scoreless for almost 20 minutes.

Darragh Warnock, Ben Galvin and Gerard McDermottroe with two were all on target to give Lar Norton's side a 0-7 to 0-6 interval lead.

O'Carroll extended Castleknock's lead on the restart when converting a free but Brigid's took charge then with Philly Ryan and Paddy Andrews (three frees) all grabbing scores.

As the pendulum swung one way and back the other Castleknock then stepped up to the plate with five points in-a-row through McDermottroe (two), O'Carroll (two) and McDaniel to lead 0-13 to 0-10.

Six minutes from time Philly Ryan finished off a fine Brigid's move to the net and the sides were level.

Lorcan McCarthy edged Brigid's into a one-point lead before O'Carroll (free) and McDaniel secured victory for Castleknock with their late scores.
