Dublin kicked off their Leinster Championship campaign in style with a commanding 3-15 to 2-9 victory over Offaly in an electric double-header clash alongside the Dublin hurlers.
Despite three late changes before throw-in — with Niamh Comerford, Leah Butler, and Aoife Higgins all stepping in; Dublin showed depth, composure, and serious firepower when it mattered most.
Slow Start… Then Dublin Hit Turbo Mode
Playing against a strong breeze in the opening half, Dublin took time to settle as Offaly edged ahead early, leading 0-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes.
But then came the moment that ignited everything.
Grace O’Shea produced a moment of magic; a stunning one-handed flick to the top corner, rattling the net and flipping the momentum entirely. From there, Dublin’s engine roared into life. Their work rate surged, the defence tightened and their dominance through the middle third began to tell. By half-time, Dublin had turned the game on its head, leading 1-7 to 0-5.
Ash Maher was simply unplayable from placed balls, delivering a clinic in free-taking with an incredible 0-9 (all from frees). Cool, clinical and relentless — every opportunity was punished.
Impact Off the Bench
As the second half opened up, Dublin’s strength in depth came to the fore. Kerrie Finnegan made a huge statement off the bench, bagging 1-1. Eimear Kehoe added another crucial score. Dublin didn’t just maintain control; they accelerated.
In the 42nd minute, the game tilted even further when Offaly’s Aoife Liffey saw red after pulling down Kerrie Finnegan, having already been on a yellow. Down to 14 players, Offaly were always going to be up against it — and Dublin sensed it.
Late Surge Warning
To their credit, Offaly refused to fade. They struck for 2-2 in the final 10 minutes, giving Dublin something to think about and a reminder that championship hurling never lets up. It’s a phase of the game Bill McCormack and his management team will no doubt be analysing ahead of next weekend.
