Fenton drives Raheny to SFC1 victory over Plunkett’s

Sat, 28th September 2019

DUBLIN SFC1 GROUP 3

RAHENY 2-17 ST OLIVER PLUNKETT’S/EOGHAN RUADH 2-10

Brian Fenton led by example as Raheny had seven points to spare over St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh in their Dublin SFC1 Group 3 encounter at Parnell Park.

However, it wasn't enough to see Raheny advance to the last-eight as St Jude's and Thomas Davis, on scoring difference, booked the two quarter-final spots.

The Dublin midfielder was majestic in possession as he kicked six points from play as well as aiding in several other scores.

Raheny’s first goal came in the tenth minute when Gavin Ivory, who tallied 1-3, finished to the net to give his side a 1-3 to 0-1 advantage.

However, two minutes later Gareth Smith converted from the penalty spot after Bernard Brogan had been fouled.

Ten minutes from the break Raheny were awarded a penalty themselves but Plunkett’s keeper Pádraig Brennan foiled Seán Grenham with the rebound crashing off the upright.

By half-time Raheny were 1-9 to 1-4 clear after playing the more expansive football in the opening 30 minutes.

Fourteen minutes into the second half former Dublin minor Rutherson Real grabbed Raheny’s second goal to give them a 2-12 to 1-6 lead but immediately Daragh Brogan cut the deficit with a goal for the Navan Road side.

Points from Seán Bugler, Niall Walsh and ‘Nesty’ Smith left just three points in it, despite Bernard Brogan being black-carded in the 43rd minute.

Raheny sub Paddy Reid made a positive impact following his introduction with three points as Raheny ran out deserving winners.

SCORERS – Raheny: B Fenton 0-6, G Ivory 1-3, R Real 1-1, P Reid 0-3, C Ivers 0-2 (0-1f), B Howard, S Grenham 0-1 each. St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh: G Smith 1-7 (1-0 pen, 0-1f), D Brogan 1-0, B Brogan, S Bugler, N Walsh 0-1 each.
