The GPA honoured the winning Senior All-Ireland Hurling and Camogie teams of 60, 50, 40, 30, 20 and 10 years back last Friday in Páirc an Chrócaigh. It was great to see 8 members of the Dublin 1965 winning team who defeated Tipperary 10-01 to 5-03. That was an era when they played with a 2nd top cross bar hence the low number of points and higher goal number. Camogie was also played as a 12 a -side game. Many changes since then. A gathering of 500 guests kicked off the All-Ireland Hurling Final in style.
Eight members of the 1965 team were present last Friday while those players who are deceased were represented by family members.
Those present were goalkeeper Eithne Leech, Mary Ryan,Ally Hussey, Mary Sherlock, Patricia Timmins, Kit Kehoe, Kay Ryder (CPT), Fran Whelan. Next year Dublin will celebrate their 10th Senior All-Ireland title in a row.
Kit Kehoe, has the distinction of playing and winning with both Dublin and her native Wexford. Kit played with Celtic when in Dublin and then went back to Wexford winning an All-Ireland with them in 1975.
Another Dublin connection on the day was with Margaret Lacey (nee O'Leary). Margaret, a Wexford native was in Dublin in 1967 when she was part of the famed Eoghan Ruadh Club who won the All-Ireland Club Championship title that year defeating Oranmore of Galway. Margaret was awarded the GPA Camogie Lifetime Achievement Award. Joe Connolly of An Ghaillimh was awarded the Hurling Award.
