Leinster U16 Championship Rd 1

Dublin 0-10 (10) Meath 1-15 (18)

Earlier today, the young Dubs suffered an eight-point defeat in their opening game of the 2026 Leinster U16 championship. Old foes Meath reversing the result of the same fixture last season and in doing so bagged themselves three valuable championship points.

Playing against the wind for the opening period of the game Dublin went into the half time dressing room just one point adrift of the Royal County. There was only one real goal opportunity in the opening half of the game and that came in the 19th minute when Dublin keeper Laura Walsh pulled off a fine save to deny Meath full forward Saoirse Farrelly. Half time score Dublin 0-04 Meath 0-05.

On the restart it was Meath who settle well into the game. At the halfway stage of the contest Meath had pushed their lead out to five points despite the best efforts of the Dublin defence. Second half substitute Darcy Hall showed great confidence and indeed skill as she expertly converted a number of long-range frees to bring her side back into contention.

The killer blow came when centre forward Lillymae O’Reilly finished off a great Meath move up the field to slot the ball past Laura Walsh in the Dublin goal. Meath substitute Gabrielle Smyth concluded the scoring for the Royals with her teams fifteenth point of the game.

Elsewhere today, Kildare defeated Carlow to get the defence of their provincial crown up and running. Next Sunday (March 15th) Kildare and Dublin will meet in the second round of the Leinster U16 championship.

This game will be played at TUD Blanchardstown, throw in time 14:00pm.
