Leinster Minor A Championship Final

Dublin 4-17 (29) Meath 2-10 (16)

Dublin minors are once again champions of Leinster following an emphatic victory over Meath at a sun-drenched Kinnegad. When the two sides meet in the opening round of the championship a single point separated the sides at the final whistle. This afternoon Declan Patton’s chargers laid down their marker with a thirteen-point victory over their great provincial rivals.

The early stage of the game was keenly contested by both teams. Indeed the two sides were level with five minutes plus gone on the clock. Two points from frees converted by Phoebe Macken and Molly Bourke, a point from play from Áine Mulligan. Meath captain Éabha Hanley hit the opening goal of the game following a cutting run by the midfielder through the heart of the Dublin defence.

The reigning champions hit back with a wonderful Áine Mulligan goal. Less than a minute later her teammate Phoebe Macken hit the back of the Meath net to push Dublin five points clear of their great rivals. From that moment in Dublin took control of proceedings. Their dominance was aided by a well taken penalty kick from the aforementioned Phobe Macken, half time score Dublin 3-07 (16) Meath 1-04 (7).

The opening period of the second half saw the two teams exchange points with Dublin maintaining control of the game despite the best efforts of the girls from the royal county. In the forty third minute Meath full forward Erin Mangan struck her sides second goal of the game to reduce Dublin’s lead to nine points.

To their credit Dublin responded expertly to Mangan’s three pointer when Laoise Murtagh fired a shot past Meath keeper Jane Deignan’s near post to affectively seal victory for the metropolitans. Dublin saw out the remaining stages of the game outscoring Meath by five points to four and in doing so secured their second provincial Minor A title in a row.
