All-Ireland LGFA Under 20 Championship Round 1
Dublin 4-10 Mayo 0-07
Report by Cóilín Duffy
Goals proved decisive for Dublin as they opened their All-Ireland U20 round-robin campaign in impressive fashion with a comprehensive 15-point win over Mayo at TU Dublin in Blanchardstown on Saturday.
In a contest where Mayo remained competitive for long stretches, Dublin’s ability to strike for four goals at crucial stages ultimately proved the defining factor and handed Robert Hollingsworth’s side a perfect start to the group stages.
Mayo began brightly and settled quickly, with Hannah Sheehy landing two early frees after Dayna Murray had opened Dublin’s scoring. The visitors looked organised and disciplined in the opening quarter, but Dublin’s attacking power soon came to the fore.
The game’s first major turning point arrived in the 14th minute when Fingallians forward Murray fired to the net for the first time for the hosts. That goal shifted momentum decisively, giving the hosts both confidence and control. From there, Dublin’s movement sharpened, with Kate O’Toole and Emma Fogarty adding important scores while Murray continued to cause major problems for the Mayo defence.
Mayo responded through Helen Murrihy and Louise Cassidy to remain within touching distance, but Dublin’s superior cutting edge saw them close the first half strongly. Murray added further scores as Dublin entered the break with a deserved 1-5 to 0-4 advantage.
Dublin’s control intensified after half-time. Fogarty was hugely influential, converting scores before blasting home Dublin’s second goal to create clear daylight between the teams.
Although Mayo battled gamely, with Sheehy continuing to convert frees and substitute Sienna Kelly also getting on the scoresheet, Dublin’s relentless attacking threat proved overwhelming. Lucy Ahern punished Mayo with a third goal midway through the half, before Murray capped an outstanding display with her second goal to seal the emphatic victory.
Dublin’s substitutes also maintained the tempo, ensuring there was no let-up as the hosts powered through the closing stages.
Murray finished with a superb 2-2, while Fogarty contributed 1-3, Ahern 1-2 and O’Toole 0-3 in an excellent team display. Mayo showed spirit throughout, but Dublin’s ruthless finishing made the difference.
Dublin now travel to Cork next Saturday for their second round-robin fixture, carrying strong momentum after this comprehensive opening win.
