U20 All Ireland Championship Rd 4

FT Dublin 4-16 (28) Galway 2-13 (19)

Those who made their way to the GAA National Development centre at Abbottstown for this fourth round U20 championship fixture were rewarded for their support as both sides served up a high scoring, competitive and indeed entertaining encounter.

Dublin’s victory over Galway has left the race to take on the Ulster champions in the U20 All-Ireland final very much alive with three Counties, Galway, Dublin and Cork still very much in contention to reach the decider, on July 11th next.

The home team had a perfect start jumping out to a 2-02 to no score lead with just eight minutes gone on the clock. Fingallians Dayna Murray on target for both of Dublin goals.

Galway’s full forward Alisha O’Malley was in superb form throughout the game both from play and placed balls. The St Fursey’s forward began to reign in Dublin’s lead when she tagged on three unanswered points, two from frees and one from play.

Dublin responded with points of their own from the aforementioned Murray and Lucy Ahern. Galway’s O’Malley then raised a green flag in the 16th minute to reduce Dublin’s lead back to four points.

With just under twenty minutes gone on the clock, St Vincent’s Hannah Murphy finished off a superb Dublin move to raise another green flag pushing Dublin’s advantage back out to a seven-points. Galway’s O’Malley once again responded by adding two further points to reduce the deficit back to five.

Once more Dublin increased their intensity levels with Ahern, Emma Fogarty and Laci Ryan adding to Dublin’s tally with three points apiece - all from play. The Dubs finished the opening period strongly leading by double scores at half time, HT Dublin 3-07 (16) Galway 1-05 (8).

Galway with the aid of the breeze began the second half in determined fashion with O’Malley and Katie Slattery quickly registering two points from play. Dub’s corner forward Dayna Murray soon cancelled out both points when she pounced to score her third goal of the game. However Galway struck back almost instantly when Katie Slattery hit the back of the Dublin net much to the pleasure of the large Galway support who were in attendance.

The game continued to ebb and flow with both teams exchanging points including a brace of scores from Dublin substitute Ciara Brogan. While Galway’s Alisha O’Malley continued to take the game to Dublin. However it was Dublin who saw the encounter out strongly finishing up with a flurry of scores. Brogan, Ahern, Kate O’Toole and Ali McGuirk all on target to ensure a well-earned nine-point victory for the home side.

Next up - Dublin will travel to take on Meath on June 27th in round five while Mayo will host Cork.
