PTSB Senior B Club Championship Final
Cuala 2-07 Na Fianna 0-9
Report by Cóilín Duffy
Cuala claimed the last adult Championship title of 2026 in St Margaret’s on Wednesday night, as a four-point victory over Na Fianna saw the Southsiders crowned PTSB Dublin LGFA Senior B Championship winners.
And while it was a brace of first half goals from Sinead Wylde which proved key for the eventual winners, the outcome did not fully reflect the tremendous defensive effort produced by the runners-up.
Na Fianna could have found themselves much further behind at several stages. Their defenders repeatedly made important late blocks, crowded the central scoring channels and forced Cuala to shoot from increasingly difficult positions. That pressure helped steer Cuala off target on numerous occasions in front of the posts, with the winners recording nine wides, striking the woodwork twice and dropping another attempt short.
Rachel Hartnett opened the scoring for Cuala, but Anna Thornton replied before Laura Grendon converted the first of eight successful frees. Sinead Wylde and Grainne O’Driscoll moved Cuala ahead, only for another Grendon free to level matters at 0-3 apiece after 18 minutes.
The contest then swung decisively in Cuala’s favour. Wylde struck the opening goal in the 19th minute and Rebecca McEvoy immediately followed with a point. Grendon replied from a free, but Wylde found the net again in the 27th minute before Neala Byrne completed the first-half scoring.
Those two goals gave Cuala a 2-5 to 0-4 interval advantage, although Na Fianna’s defensive work ensured the deficit remained manageable despite sustained pressure.
Wylde added her second point within a minute of the restart, but Cuala would not score again for more than half an hour. Na Fianna’s defence produced an excellent display throughout that barren period for the leaders. Defenders threw themselves into blocks, tracked runners and repeatedly applied enough pressure to send promising Cuala attacks off course.
Na Fianna gradually reduced the deficit through Grendon’s accuracy. She converted frees in the 43rd and 47th minutes before adding two more in quick succession during the closing ten minutes. Her eighth point left only three between the teams as the contest moved into injury-time.
Cuala’s own defence held firm when Na Fianna sought the goal required to draw level. O’Driscoll finally ended Cuala’s long wait for a score by converting a free in the 65th minute, restoring their four-point cushion and securing the victory.
Both managers turned to their benches as fatigue grew, with Na Fianna making five changes and Cuala four, yet the defensive intensity remained undiminished throughout an increasingly demanding second half.
The game was frequently interrupted by frees, with Cuala conceding 29 and Na Fianna 17. Grendon punished those indiscretions superbly, converting all eight of her placed-ball attempts and accounting for all but one of Na Fianna’s scores. Thornton registered their sole point from open play.
Cuala created 21 scoring attempts compared with Na Fianna’s 14, but their conversion rate of 42 per cent underlined the impact of Na Fianna’s disciplined defensive resistance. Wylde’s two goals ultimately separated the teams, while O’Driscoll’s closing free ensured there would be no dramatic late equaliser.
Although Cuala deservedly prevailed after leading from the closing stages of the opening half, Na Fianna’s work-rate, determination and willingness to make last-ditch interventions kept the final competitive until the final whistle.
After the game Dublin GAA Chairman Joe Keane presented the Cup to Cuala captain Sarah Dunne. As the adult Championship season came to a close Joe paid tribute to St. Margaret’s GAA Club for their outstanding hosting of 16 of the 18 Championship finals this year, along with nearby Fingallians and Parnell Park.
Fixtures secretary Stephen Harbron presented the PTSB Player of the Match award to Sinéad Wylde, following her impressive display over the hour.
