RESULT Leinster U16 Championship Rd 2
FT score Dublin 1-08 (11) Kildare 3-10 (19)
Full credit to both teams for playing a high paced entertaining game of football in extremely difficult weather conditions at the home of the newly crowned O’Connor Cup champions, TU Dublin.
Players not only had to endure a gale force wind they also had to deal with periodic heavy rain / sleet showers - far from ideal playing conditions.
Kildare got off to the dream start when within three minutes Amy Wall was on target for the opening goal of game. The visitors dominated the opening quarter of the game and had jumped out to a 2-05 lead before Darcy Hall got Dublin on the scoreboard with a well taken free (18th minute). Centre forward, Hall had just earlier sent her penalty kick to the left of Kildare’s, Sadie Burke’s post.
As the game moved into final stages of the opening half the home team had started to come more into the contest. The young Dubs were rewarded for their raised efforts when Anna Kellegher found the back of the Kildare net after a fine Dublin up field movement.
But it was Kildare that lead at the interval by 2-07 to Dublin’s 1-02. Catherine Murphy on target for Kildare’s second goal.
On the restart both defensive units where working exceptionally hard it in what was punishing playing conditions. Darcy Hall from Ranelagh Gaels gave an exceptional performance from placed balls repeatedly punishing Kildare with her free kicking ability.
As Dublin chased the game down it was Kildare who registered the killer blow with a three pointer against the run of play when an unmarked Beth O’Donoghue blasted her shot past Chloe Walsh in the Dublin goal to put the result beyond a spirited Dublin outfit.
Up next, Dublin will travel to play Carlow on April 4th. Earlier today Meath registered a seven win over Carlow to remain unbeaten in the championship.
