Preview: Dublin SFC1/SFC2 quarter-finals

Fri, 11th October 2019

The clash of St Vincent's and St Jude's gets the Dublin SFC1 quarter-finals underway on Saturday in Parnell Partk (5.15).

They are familiar championship rivals having met in recent seasons.

St Vincent's booked their berth in the last-eight by defeating Ballinteer St John's, 4-13 to 1-10, in their concluding Group 4 game in Monastery Road, Clondalkin.

Points from Tomás Quinn ('45'), Seán Lowry and Adam Baxter (two) gave Vincent's an early advantage before Enda Varley struck for their first goal in the 13th minute following good approach play from Cormac Diamond.

The Marino side maintained the upperhand, with Seán Lambe impressing at wing-back, and scores from Albert Martin and Diarmuid Connolly stretched Vins lead before Connolly set Quinn up for Vincent's second goal.

Coming up to the half-time break Vincent's were 2-7 to 0-3 clear before St John's finished the half with a point from Aaron Bradshaw and an Aodhán Clabby goal to make it 2-7 to 1-4 at the break.

Seven minutes into the second half Connolly scored a brilliant individual goal to push his side ten points clear and Enda Varley got their fourth goal with the outcome already decided.

St Jude's topped Group 3 by winning two games and drawing their opening against St Oliver Plunkett's/Eoghan Ruadh.

Last time out for the Tymon North outfit they defeated Thomas Davis 1-9 to 0-8 in O'Toole Park when Diarmuid McLoughlin's injury-time goal sealed victory.

Points from Pádraic Clarke (both frees) settled Jude's but there was nothing in it during the opening period with Ryan Deegan top-scoring for Thomas Davis and the Tymon North side led 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time.

The meeting of Ballyboden St Enda's and Na Fianna is the second SFC1 quarter-final on Saturday (7.0).

Ballyboden St Enda’s made it three wins from three starts in Group 2 as they cruised to a 20-point victory (2-20 to 1-6) over Skerries Harps to complete their Group 2 programme at Parnell Park.

After leading by eight points at the break kicked six points in-a-row on the restart to move 1-14 to 0-3 clear and the result was never in doubt despite having Alan Flood dismissed with a little over ten minutes remaining.

Ryan Basquel (free), Ross McGarry (two), Colm Baquel (free), Warren Egan and keeper Daragh Gogan converted a ‘45’ to cruise clear.

Boden’s second goal arrived in the 48th minute when Ryan Basquel put the finish on a counter-attack move that started with a loose ball out of defence by Skerries Harps.

Colm Basquel, who scored 0-5 (0-4f), did the hard running before offloading to Darren O'Reilly who played possession onto Warren Egan who placed Ryan Basquel (1-5, 0-2f) who slide the ball to the net past Alan Cullianan.

Boden led 1-8 to 0-3 at the break the goal coming in the 25th minute when Aran Waters drove forward with purpose before playing a one-two with an unmarked Darren O’Reilly, close to the Skerries goal, before rifling to the roof of Alan Cullinan’s net.

On Sunday there is also a Dublin SFC1 quarter-final double-header in Parnell Park with the meeting of Kilmacud Crokes versus Clontarf first up (2.0).

Crokes enjoyed a 100 per cent record in Group 1, winning all three group games, concluding the regulation games with a 2-19 to 1-10 victory over St Sylvester's in Parnell Park.

A Pat Burke goal in the 27th minute gave Crokes the spark they needed and a very impressive start to the second half soon moved the Stillorgan side out of sight.

After a cagey opening Burke hit three points inside two minutes between the seventh and ninth minute to settle Crokes who lined out without Dublin All-Ireland winners Paul Mannion and Cian O'Sullivan.

Dublin panelists Andrew McGowan and Cian O'Connor started for Crokes but McGowan hobbled off in the opening half after suffering an ankle injury.

Further points from Hugh Kenny, Shane Horan and Dan O'Brien had the reigning champions 0-6 to 0-1 to the good after 13 minutes with Alex Wright claiming Syls only score.

Inside the last ten minutes Syls improved with points from Ross Hazley and Karl Archibald, earlier they had a goal opportunity after Jack Hazley gathered a long, high delivery at the second attempt before offloading to Jamie Kennedy but the corner-forward miscued from close range.

Three minutes from the interval Burke powered past three defenders before deftly guiding the ball over the head of advancing Syls keeper MIchael Shiel for the opening goal of the contest and by half-time Crokes were 1-10 to 0-6 ahead.

Crokes restarted with intent and kicked five unanswered points in six minutes with half-time sub Callum Pearson (who kicked four points overall) claiming two of them with Burke, Shane Cunningham and Hugh Kenny also on target.

In the 50th minute brilliantly slick interplay between the Crokes forward unit concluded with Ciarán Russell guiding the ball to the Syls net and by the 53rd minute Kilmacud were 2-19 to 0-9 clear.

In the concluding minutes Alex Wright converted a penalty and Micheál McCarthy added a point to improve the look of the scoreline from a Sylvester's perspective.

Clontarf secured their last-eight spot on scoring difference over Lucan Sarsfields after beating the west Dublin side 1-17 to 1-10 in their last Group 2 game.

Kevin Lillis was Clontarf's top scorer as his tally of 1-6 lead his side to victory at O'Toole Park.

Lillis struck 1-6 (1-0 pen, 0-2f) for the winners with his penalty coming in the 12th minute following a foul on Brian Berney.

With Andy Foley giving 'Tarf a great platform at midfield they propsered and led by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Clontarf restarted much the better with points from Berney, Foley, Lillis and Dublin U20 panelist of this year, Kieran McKeown, all striking points.

Lucan got a goal through Brian Collopy but overall relied too heavily on Brendan Gallagher as their scorer-in-chief from deadball.

The last quarter-final sees Castleknock face Thomas Davis at the Donnycarney venue (4.0).

Castleknock edged out Dublin 15 rivals St Brigid's 0-15 to 1-11 in their concluding Group 4 game with Tommy McDaniel's free in the fifth minute of added time eventually separating the sides at St Peregrine's, Blakestown Road,.

The sides were level on seven occasions over the course of the 60-plus minutes before Castleknock got the winner scores in the concluding moments with Seamus O'Carroll converting a 40-metre free to bring equality before sub McDaniel slotted the winner.

Castleknock started well with early points from Kevin Stephenson and Rob Shaw before a brace of Paddy Andrews scores brought the sides level, 0-2 each.

Points from Mal Tighe, Andrews and two from Philly Ryan had the Russell Park men 0-6 to 0-3 ahead before Castleknock scored four points in quick succession at the close of the opening half having gone scoreless for almost 20 minutes.

Darragh Warnock, Ben Galvin and Gerard McDermottroe with two were all on target to give Lar Norton's side a 0-7 to 0-6 interval lead.

O'Carroll extended Castleknock's lead on the restart when converting a free but Brigid's took charge then with Philly Ryan and Paddy Andrews (three frees) all grabbing scores.

As the pendulum swung one way and back the other Castleknock then stepped up to the plate with five points in-a-row through McDermottroe (two), O'Carroll (two) and McDaniel to lead 0-13 to 0-10.

Six minutes from time Philly Ryan finished off a fine Brigid's move to the net and the sides were level.

Lorcan McCarthy edged Brigid's into a one-point lead before O'Carroll (free) and McDaniel secured victory for Castleknock with their late scores.

Despite losing their last Group 3 game to St Jude's (1-9 to 0-8) Thomas Davis booked their quarter-final spot, holding off Raheny on scoring difference with Ryan Deegan, Adam Fallon and Cian Murphy doing well against St Jude's.
