PREVIEW: Dublin v Kerry - Allianz Football League

PREVIEW: Dublin v Kerry - Allianz Football League
Tue, 17 February 2026

Dublin lie second in the list of National Football League Division 1 winners with only their opponents on Saturday night, Kerry, having won more titles since the competition’s inception back in 1925-26.

The Kingdom lead the way with 24 titles and their excellent record in finals has seen them finish runner-up on just seven occasions.

Of course, they are the current holders having eased past Mayo by 1-18 to 1-12 in last year’s renewal.

Dublin’s record is not as impressive (winning on 14 occasions and being runners-up fifteen times) and after finishing runners-up on four occasions, the Dubs finally got over the line in1952-53 when defeating Cavan by 4-6 to 0-9.

They next won the league in 1957-58 on their way to a league and championship double but the Dubs had to wait another eighteen years before regaining the title as they pipped Derry by 2-10 to 0-15 in the 1976 decider.

A loss to Kerry followed the following year but they emerged victorious against Mayo in the 1978 final, winning by 2-18 to 2-13.

Dublin’s next success arrived in 1987 as a Kieran Duff-inspired side defeated Kerry by 1-11 to 0-11 with them picking up two further triumphs when beating Kildare in 1991 and Donegal after a replay two years later.

One of Dublin’s most heartbreaking final defeats arrived in 2011, when they lost to Cork by 0-21 to 2-14, having led by seven points midway through the second-half with echoes of their All-Ireland semi-final defeat to the Rebels the previous summer all too resonant.

However, that defeat preceded a period of dominance for the Dubs as they reeled off four Division 1 titles on the bounce, including a memorable 2-18 to 0-13 success against Kerry in the 2016 final.

The old rivals also shared the honours on one occasion back in 2021 as restrictions caused by Covid left the final unplayed after Kerry and Dublin had registered semi-finals wins against Tyrone and Donegal respectively.

Finals will be far from the thoughts of both teams on Saturday night with Dublin hoping to build on last weekend’s victory over Monaghan having lost their opening two matches to Donegal and Mayo.

Kerry lie a point ahead in the table as they opened up with an unconvincing win against Roscommon before losing to Donegal in Round 2 and drawing with Galway last Saturday afternoon.

The match will be shown live on TG4 with throw-in at 7pm.
