PREVIEW: Dublin v Tyrone All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Final

The race for Sam Maguire heats up another notch this weekend, as Dublin take on Tyrone in the All-Ireland Senior Football Quarter-Final at Croke Park on Saturday evening, throw-in 6:15pm.

Dublin navigated Group 4 with wins against Galway and Derry, while we lost to reigning All-Ireland champions Armagh between those victories.

We then earned our place in the last eight of the championship with a gritty win against a defiant Cork team last weekend.

Chris Óg Jones had helped the Rebels hit the front at HQ, while Brian Hurley, Ian Maguire and Mark Cronin helped Cork to a two-point half time lead.

Seán Bugler was key to helping the Dubs stay in touch; after the break, we'd get ourselves back into contention thanks to points from Cormac Costello, Lee Gannon and Niall Scully.

Brian Howard then scored his first-ever Championship goal in front of Hill 16, giving Dublin the lead in the 46th minute and almost taking the net off in the process.

But back came Cork, and after a flurry of scores, they found themselves ahead, Seán Walsh giving a point advantage.

Costello, Paddy Small and Bugler then swung the game back Dublin's way before Luke Breathnach wrapped up Dublin's progression into the quarter-finals with the final point of the game.

Dublin haven't played Tyrone in the All-Ireland Championship since 2019 and have a fairly good record against the Red Hands, most notably our 1995 and 2018 All-Ireland final wins over the Ulstermen.

But past meetings won't be the focus going into this one; Tyrone have impressed in this year's Championship, finishing top of their All-Ireland SFC group to progress directly to the last 8.

Tyrone go into Saturday's quarter-final hoping to pick up where they left off against Cavan, a win that saw them win Group 1 a couple of weeks ago.

After a decent league campaign, Malachy O'Rourke's men battled hard in Ulster, beating Cavan before going down to Armagh, losing the provincial semi-final by just a point.

They then laid down a massive marker by beating Ulster champions Donegal in the first round of the All-Ireland group stage, where Seanie O'Donnell and Darren McCurry stepped forward and made names for themselves.

A defeat against Mayo would follow that impressive win, but they bounced back by thrashing Cavan 0-31 to 0-18 to secure their place in the next round. McCurry was impressive once more, picking up 0-9, while in this win, Darragh Canavan answered the call from his county with five points.

Expect a fierce battle between two counties that will be ready to die with their boots on as they look to take one step closer to lifting the Sam Maguire Cup.
