PREVIEW: PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Hurling Championship Quarter-Finals

Precious semi-finals spots in the PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Hurling Championship are up for grabs next weekend with four mouthwatering encounters taking place in Parnell Park across Saturday and Sunday. 

There’s a fresh look to the pairings given the absence of perennial challengers Ballyboden St Enda’s and St Vincent’s, making next week’s action all the more intriguing. 

CUALA v WHITEHALL COLMCILLE (Parnell Park, Saturday, 3.30)

Cuala are one of only two sides to have come through the group stages unscathed as their late show against Ballyboden last Saturday week preserved their perfect group campaign. 

George O’Toole netted twice on that occasion and his development has been pivotal for a Cuala side that have been denied the scoring threat of both the injured Liam Murphy and dual star Con O’Callaghan. 

It is further down the field that the Dalkey outfit are at their strongest, starting with their exceptional goalkeeper Seán Brennan, through the calm assurance of Sean Moran at centre-back with Eoghan O’Callaghan, Diarmuid Ó Floinn, Conor Groarke and Jake Malone all impressing this year. 

Whitehall have enjoyed a mixed group campaign but looked back to something approaching their best when they booked their last-eight place when defeating Erin’s Isle by 0-21 to 0-16 in Round 5. 

Eoghan O’Donnell remains a talismanic figure at full-forward and his clash with O’Callaghan could prove seismic while the pace of Jamie Raftery and the free-taking of Paddy Spellacy are other vital strings to Whitehall’s bow.  

KILMACUD CROKES v ST BRIGID’S (Parnell Park, Saturday, 5.30) 

Crokes are the other team that registered five wins from their five group games and they look determined to claim a title that they last won in 2022. 

Question marks still remain however, despite their 4-17 to 1-16 win against Na Fianna in Round 5 with their inability to avail of Brian Ryan’s dismissal for the holders leaving the contest in the balance until late goals by Ger Veale and Ronan Hayes. 

Alex Considine impressed from full-forward that day but left the field injured while the classy Brendan Kenny was a peripheral figure until his two late points. 

St Brigid’s lack the depth of their opponents but possess proven scoring calibre in Paul Winters and Cian O’Sullivan with the latter in fine form despite their loss to St Jude’s in Round 5. 

The experience provided at the back by Alan Nolan, Cathal Doyle and Andrew Dunphy will be crucial to their chances but the options available to Crokes look far greater. 

LUCAN SARSFIELDS v ERIN’S ISLE (Parnell Park, Sunday, 2.00)

Lucan have slowly but surely put together an impressive group campaign with their only loss coming against Cuala and they showed their form when easing past Faughs by 4-23 to 1-12 last Saturday week. 

There’s no doubting the talent that they possess up front through the likes of Ben Coffey, Paul Crummey, Sean Harkness, Charlie Keher and Ciaran Dowling but consistency can sometimes prove elusive on the biggest days. 

Colm Walsh and Killian Costello represent the enthusiasm of youth while Chris Crummey, John Bellew and Paul Rigney, have been there, seen that, done that. 

That cannot be said for an Erin’s Isle side that have taken to the top-flight like a duck to water but what they lack in experience, they more than make up for with a fresh and positive approach.

Conor Donohoe is a talismanic figure from centre-back with Lorcan Finnegan equally adept at full-back and if they enjoy influential games, then Ollie Gaffney, Mikey Donohoe and Conor Berrigan possess more than enough threat in attack to take the chances that come their way.    

NA FIANNA v ST JUDE’S (Parnell Park, Sunday, 4.00)

Despite losing their final group game to Kilmacud, Na Fianna could take some solace from that defeat with their battling display in the second-half despite playing with fourteen reflecting well on their character. 

Injuries to key personnel have been an issue all year with Donal Burke absent from that defeat to Kilmacud but the integration into the line-up of both John Tierney and the returning Eoghan McHugh have been a positive development for manager Aidan Downes. 

Jack Meagher and Ciaran Stacey gained valuable minutes last Saturday week and Sean Currie provided that leadership that will be needed if Na Fianna are to take another step towards their fourth successive title. 

They meet a St Jude’s team that have been a revelation from half-time in their Round 3 clash against Lucan Sarsfields and while they narrowly lost on that occasion, they have excelled from that juncture with wins over Ballyboden and St Brigid’s.  

Ger McManus, Joe McManus, Danny Sutcliffe and Ciaran Mangan continue to influence despite their advancing years and they’ll look to the likes of Callum Graham and Cathal Martin to provide the scoring ammunition in attack.
