PREVIEW: Senior Hurlers Prepare For All-Ireland Semi Final Clash With Cork

PREVIEW: Senior Hurlers Prepare For All-Ireland Semi Final Clash With Cork
By Conor MartinWed, 2 July 2025

Dublin are gearing up to do battle with Cork for a place in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final, when they meet this Saturday in the last four (throw-in 5pm).

Dublin have responded well since missing out on a place in the Leinster final, bouncing back by beating Kildare and then Limerick in the All-Ireland series.

Ronan Hayes, Diarmaid Ó Dúlaing and a second-half goal from Fergal Whitely ensured Dublin racked up the points and would eventually score 3-25 as they beat Kildare in comfortable style in Newbridge in the preliminary All-Ireland quarter-final.

Dublin's reward for securing their place in the last six was a formidable one against Limerick, who were aiming to retake their place on the All-Ireland Champions throne this year.

Dublin were written off by almost everyone going into the quarter-final.

Niall Ó Ceallacháin's Dublin had to show resolve and grit, especially when Captain Chris Crummey was sent off in the 15th minute.

But rather than fold under pressure, Dublin regrouped, with the likes of Seán Currie, Cian O'Sullivan, Conor Burke and Ronan Hayes all playing their part in an impressive first half showing.

Brian Hayes got in on the scoring action after the restart, and Limerick found some momentum of their own, and thanks to Adam English and Aidan O’Connor, they were in front by the 51st minute.

Just as it looked like the extra man would get Limerick over the line, Dublin were back in control thanks to two goals in 60 seconds. John Hetherton scored a screamer from a tight angle, which was followed by O’Sullivan sending the Dubs fans wild just as they’d caught their breath after the first goal.

Aaron Gillane and Gearóid Hegarty had put the squeeze on Dublin, with the former being expertly denied by Dublin goalkeeper Seán Brennan, who pulled off one of the saves of the season.

Brian Hayes and Seán Currie were Dublin’s final point scorers of the game as Ó Ceallacháin's Dubs sealed a statement win.

Unfortunately for Dublin, Cork have dominated championship meetings between the pair since 1928.

Dublin have beaten the Rebels in championship settings on only two occasions, which were way back in 1922 and 1927; both victories coming in All-Ireland finals.

The overall record between us and Cork stands at 17 Cork wins, two Dublin wins and one draw.

Dublin's last appearance in an All-Ireland Semi Final was 12 years ago- the 2013 last four clash also against Cork. On that occasion, things sadly didn’t go our way as Cork eventually won by five points.

Just like the Dubs, Cork beat Limerick this year, claiming a famous win over the Treaty on their way to a 55th Micky Mackey Cup. Cork have won the Munster title more than any other county.

Their championship ambitions were under threat at one point after a 16-point defeat in the provincial group stage before they qualified for the Munster final ahead of Tipperary on the head-to-head rule.

They would get their own back on Limerick for being on the receiving end of their group stage thrashing, winning a nail-biting penalty shootout to claim their first Munster championship win since 2018.

Patrick Horgan top-scored in that one with 1-9, while Cork's Brian Hayes and Alan Connolly will also pose a huge threat on Saturday.

Seán Currie and Horgan are in excellent form for their respective counties; the Dubliner is the second-highest top scorer this championship and the top scorer when it comes to the four remaining counties in this weekend’s semi-finals. He has scored 4-61 this championship, while his Cork counterpart, Horgan, is the Rebels' top scorer with 3-42.

Dublin are one step away from a long-awaited All-Ireland final appearance, but will need your support as they come up against another huge test this Saturday.

Any match tickets still available can be found here.

You can also watch Saturday’s semi-final live on RTÉ 2 and BBC 2 Northern Ireland.
