Leinster MFC Round 1

Dublin 2-10 (16) Meath 1-12 (15)

Reigning Leinster minor champions Dublin emerged victorious today from their Leinster opening round championship tussle with Meath. At the final whistle a single score was the difference between the two sides who have been level at 1-05 apiece at the interval.

Dublin began well leading by 1-04 to 0-2 with ten minutes gone on the clock. Centre forward Ellie Reen was on target for the opening goal of the contest. To their credit and with the aid of a strong win Meath as expected responded quickly to Reen’s three pointer.

A high speculative shot from Erin Mangan rebounced off the Dublin crossbar and was finished to the back of the net by an alert Katelyn Robinson. Meath now playing with renewed energy tapped on three unanswered points to level the game, 1-05 apiece at half time.

Despite playing against the strong wind Meath dominated the opening ten minutes of the second half moving three points clear of their rivals, Chloe Doherty on song for the Royal County.

Ellie Reen once more came to her sides rescue with a second well taken goal -all square again! Reen’s goal gave the visitors renewed energy with Molly Bourke tapping on two points, one from play and a second from a free to push her team two clear with ten minutes left to go.

Further points were exchanged between the teams with Meath’s Chloe Doherty continuing to cause huge problems for the Dublin backline. At the other end of the pitch, Phoebe Macken and the aforementioned Molly Bourke kept the scoreboard ticking over for Dublin, both players on song with their free kicks.

With four minutes of stoppage played Ella McGlue got the last point of the game for Meath but the Royals needed a goal. On the final whistle it was a resilient Dublin who emerged victorious with a one point hard earned victory over a well drilled Meath outfit.

Elsewhere Wexford defeated Kildare on the road by 3-09 to 3-05 to set up a mouthwatering home tie against the Dubs on March 21st next. Fixture details to follow.
