St Vincent’s secured their place in the final of the PTSB Dublin Senior 2 Football Championship following their narrow 1-10 to 0-11 victory over Fingal Ravens at the ClannMhuire grounds in Naul on Saturday afternoon.
As the final scoreline would suggest, the contest wasn’t decided right until the final moments with Ciaran O’Connor kicking a crucial two-pointer to confirm his team’s welcome return to SFC1 for 2027.
The Marino side could not have wished for a better start as Sean Lowry netted in the opening minute while Michael O’Rowe added a point to leave Ravens trailing by four points with just two minutes on the clock.
The Rolestown side finally settled into the encounter with the scoring returns of James Farrell, Sean Kinsella and Jake Pope trimming their deficit to just two points (1-5 to 0-6) by the interval.
Defences remained on top after the break with O’Connor, Sean Keogh and Brian Murray particularly prominent for Vinnies while Paddy Gilroy caught the eye with some critical turnovers when introduced off the bench.
Points from Sean Keogh and Cian Dunne saw Vins retain their narrow lead but the contest seemed destined for extra-time as Pope and Dylan Kettle levelled matters by the 57th minute.
However, St Vincent’s, who were relegated from the top-flight last year, dug deep with O’Connor proving their match-winner with his superb two-pointed score.
They will be joined in the decider by a St Brigid’s team that were pushed all the way before eventually recording a 1-14 to 0-14 success against Round Towers Lusk in Garristown.
A tight affair was anticipated and so it proved with Cormac Howley leading the way for Towers as they enjoyed a narrow 0-5 to 0-3 lead after twenty minutes.
St Brigid’s kept their own scoreboard ticking over as Conor Watt, Scott Daly and Mark Donnelly all pointed while Andrew Waldron kicked a two-pointer to augment further points from Stephen Donnelly and Sean Egan.
Howley scored 0-9 in total including five points from play as Lusk remained competitive through the efforts of Jack Hussey, Mark Hanratty and Darragh Kilduff.
Their opponents gradually took control of matters in the second-half with a goal from Philly Ryan leaving St Brigid’s with a three-point lead and the former Dublin attacker added a two-pointer soon after to keep his side in a dominant position.
Indeed, that advantage could well have been greater but for some errant shooting from the Blanchardstown side but they had enough in the tank thanks to late points by Watt, Waldron and Gavin Sheridan to complete a deserved win.
PTSB SFC2 semi-finals: St Brigid’s 1-14 Round Towers Lusk 0-14; St Vincent’s 1-10 Fingal Ravens 0-11.
