Round-Up: PTSB Dublin SFC 1 Round 2

Ballyboden St Enda’s advanced to the quarter-finals of the PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Football Championship when accounting for Castleknock by 1-21 to 0-14 at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon.

The holders started brightly through two Ciaran Duggan points but a trio of scores at the opposite end from Eoin Sawyer saw ‘Knock enjoy a deserved 0-8 to 0-7 lead at half-time. 

Ryan Basquel’s goal within four minutes of the restart turned the tide back in Boden’s favour while Daire Sweeney kicked seven second-half points to ease his side into the knockout stages. 

Templeogue Synge Street joined Castleknock in second spot as they bounced back superbly from their Round 1 defeat to Ballyboden when defeating St Oliver Plunkett’s/Eoghan Ruadh by 1-18 to 0-16 in O’Toole Park.    

The return of both Lorcan O’Dell (0-6) and Scott McConnell (0-5) brought much-needed firepower to the Synger attack but the scoring contributions of both Irinel Popa (0-5) and Garreth Smith (0-4) ensured a dramatic conclusion to events. 

Plunkett’s edged in front late on through scores by Seán Bugler, Ted Furman and Smith but an O’Dell brace got TSS back on track before Harry O’Donovan made certain of victory with a goal in injury time.  

Another team to book their last-eight berth were Thomas Davis, who recovered from a five-point interval deficit to edge Skerries Harps by 2-18 to 1-19. 

A Paddy Kelly goal and the dismissal of Davy Keogh left Skerries well placed at the break, leading by 1-10 to 0-8. 

However, Thomas Davis completely dominated the second-half with Chris Sallier’s penalty and the sending-off of Skerries’ Paul Wilde adding momentum to their challenge and they secured the victory through a late goal by substitute Fionn Lynch. 

Group 4 provided the bulk of the drama on Saturday afternoon as Cuala and Ballymun Kickhams registered their first wins when pipping St Jude’s and Lucan Sarsfields respectively. 

In Naul, Ballymun kicked late points through Dean Rock and Fiach Andrews to edge Lucan by 0-18 to 0-17 with John Small playing a pivotal role for Kickhams.

Rock top scored with 0-7 with the scoring returns of Rian Doherty (0-6) and Mark Lavin (0-4) proving in vain for Lucan by the final whistle.

At O’Toole Park, Con O’Callaghan fisted a dramatic late point as Cuala edged St Jude’s by 1-15 to 0-17. 

The Dalkey outfit led by 1-9 to 0-6 at the break with David O’Dowd netting in the 15thminute but Jude’s clawed their way back into contention through seven Mick Lawlor points and three each by Oisín Costello and Eoghan Costello. 

That looked to be enough to secure their second win on the bounce but substitute Charlie McMorrow levelled matters before O’Callaghan calmly settled the issue six minutes into added time.    

Meanwhile, on Friday night, Ballinteer St John’s seized top spot in Group 2 as they overcame Clontarf by 1-12 to 0-11 at Parnell Park. 

St John’s were indebted to Luke Breathnach in the first quarter, who kicked three points from play to keep his side in touch and they controlled the remainder of the half with Jack Lundy’s 27th minute goal building a 1-7 to 0-5 interval lead. 

That momentum was maintained after the break as Luke Cullen scored a trio of points and while Clontarf, missing the influential Jack McCaffrey, finished strongly, Ballinteer held firm to secure their second successive win. 

Their final group match will be against a Kilmacud Crokes team that kept their season alive when easing past a disappointing Whitehall Colmcille by 3-13 to 0-6. 

Crokes welcomed back Paul Mannion to their starting line-up and his brace of two-pointers and a Cian O’Connor goal saw them lead by 1-9 to 0-2 by the turnaround.  

Kilmacud were rarely troubled after the break with goals at either end of the half from Shane Horan and substitute Padraig Purcell proving too much for Whitehall.   

Another team to bounce back from a Round 1 defeat were Na Fianna, who did enough to get the better of Raheny by 0-16 to 0-11 in St Margaret’s. 

Raheny opened brightly thanks to scores from Adam McAweeney, Brian Fenton and Brian Howard but Na Fianna assumed control through Conor McHugh, Brian O’Leary and David Quinn to lead by double scores by half-time. 

That trio accounted for thirteen points over the hour with four points by Raheny goalkeeper Rob Hennelly proving in vain by the final whistle.
