Round-up PTSB Round one - Dublin Senior one Hurling Championship

2025 finalists Na Fianna and Lucan Sarsfields enjoyed bright starts to their respective campaigns in what proved to be a very busy opening round in the PTSB Dublin Senior 1 Hurling Championship over the past few days.

Seeking a fourth successive senior title this year, Na Fianna showed they mean business in 2026 by recording a convincing 0-25 to 1-9 Group 1 victory over Erin’s Isle at Parnell Park on Friday evening.

Complimenting six points apiece from Sean Currie and Dublin senior hurler Donal Burke, wing-back Will Wheatley was on hand to register 0-3 in an assured display by the title holders.

Despite Nathan Fitzgerald claiming a late goal, Erin’s Isle ultimately came up short in the end.

In the curtain-raiser at the Donnycarney venue on Friday, a 65th minute point from Enda O’Donnell saw Whitehall Colmcille edging out Naomh Barróg on a final score of 2-19 to 0-24.

Goals from O’Donnell’s brother Eoghan and Conor Sheedy also aided the cause of the Collins Avenue side, but with dead-ball specialist Joe Flanagan (0-14) in excellent scoring form, Naomh Barróg made life difficult for them and could yet have a big say in the 2026 championship.

The same could be said of Kilmacud Crokes, who completed the opening round of Group 1 with an impressive 2-26 to 0-16 triumph over St Vincent’s at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon.

A brace of quickfire first half goals from Brian Hayes propelled Crokes towards a 2-13 to 0-9 half-time lead in this game and they continued to push on after the resumption with all six of their starting forwards getting on the scoresheet.

Brian Bolger, Conor Burke and Matteo Cardiff all picked off nice scores for Vincent’s, but Crokes were not to be denied on the day.

Due to the margin of their victory, Kilmacud currently sit at the summit of the Group 1 table – ahead of Na Fianna and Whitehall Colmcille on score difference.

Erin’s Isle and St Vincent’s will be looking to make amends for their opening round losses, but will have a perfect opportunity to do so when they face each other at Parnell Park this Friday (throw-in 6.45pm) in the second set of Group 1 fixtures.

At 8.30pm on the same evening, Na Fianna and Whitehall Colmcille will lock horns in Donnycarney. The winners of this game – if there is to be one – can put themselves in a strong position to make the knockout rounds of the Dublin Senior 1 Championship.

Kilmacud will be hoping for a similar result at Parnell Park on Saturday, but can expect to encounter a stubborn resistance from Naomh Barrog (throw-in 5.30pm).

The old adage of ‘goals win games’ came to pass for the aforementioned Lucan Sarsfields at Parnell Park on Saturday with Sean Harkness, Paul Crummey and Donal Flannery all rattling the net in their 3-10 to 1-14 win over Ballyboden St Enda’s in a Group 2 opener.

While David Gleeson struck five opening half points to supplement a Jonathan O’Driscoll goal, Ballyboden marginally came out on the wrong side of a tightly-contested affair.

The Dublin Senior 1 action for 2026 had actually gotten underway at O’Toole Park last Thursday evening when Cuala and St Jude’s clashed in a Group 2 game.

A brace of goals by attacker Liam Murphy offered Cuala a strong foothold and with Galway native Donal O’Shea contributing an outstanding haul of 1-10, they played with plenty of confidence throughout.

Diarmaid McLoughlin and Callum Graham picked off some excellent scores for Jude’s, but they couldn’t deny Cuala a comprehensive 3-28 to 0-15 success.

O’Toole Park also played host to a Group 2 game on Saturday afternoon as St Brigid’s claimed a hard-earned 1-22 to 1-17 victory over Faughs – a combined haul of 1-13 from Kieran O’Sullivan and Paul Winters proving pivotal for the winners.

2025 All Star winner Cian O’Sullivan also chipped in with three points and while James O’Brien led the way for Faughs with a 0-7 tally, Brigid’s held firm.

Currently out in front of the Group 2 table due to their superior scoring average, Cuala make the journey across the city this Saturday to take on Lucan Sarsfields in what promises to be a mouthwatering showdown at Parnell Park (throw-in 3.30pm).

The other winning team in the group over the weekend (St Brigid’s) will be back in O’Toole Park on Saturday at the same time to face a Ballyboden St Enda’s side that are undoubtedly eager to show they can still have an impact on the championship
