Seán Doherty RIP

Seán Doherty RIP
Tue, 8 July 2025

Dublin GAA are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary former Dublin All-Ireland-winning captain Seán “The Doc” Doherty.

Séan was captain of the Dubs for Kevin Heffernan's first championship season in 1974, lifting Sam after Dublin's famous All-Ireland Final victory over Galway that year to end Dublin's 11-year wait for All-Ireland glory.

He played an integral role in Dublin's success during the 1970s, a period which saw the rebirth of Dublin football, an epic rivalry with Mick O’Dwyer’s Kerry and the excitement, noise and colour of “Heffo’s Army”.

Séan was a no-nonsense full back, who inspired those around him through his actions on the field, giving every Dublin team he played on a platform for success. His leadership talents were spotted by Heffo, who made Seán his on-field general in 1974 and 1975 when he captained the team.

In addition to winning an All-Ireland in 1974, his performances that year were also rewarded with an All-Star.

Séan was full back on the Dublin team that contested five consecutive All-Ireland finals between ’74 and ’78 winning two further titles in ’76 & ’77.

He also won five Leinster titles and two National football leagues- in '76 & ’78. Séan retired from inter-county football following the loss in the All-Ireland final to Kerry in 1978.

Dublin County Board Chairman Ken O’Sullivan has paid tribute to Seán's legacy.

“Séan Doherty was a classy full back and a giant of a man at the heart of the Dublin's full back line in the late 60s and the 1970s.

"As an All-Ireland-winning captain, he is an icon in Dublin GAA's history and an inspiration to so many who try to follow in his footsteps.

"The Dublin GAA community is deeply saddened by Seán's passing and we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and former teammates at club and county.

"An absolute gentleman. May he rest in peace”.
