DUBLIN 2-19

KILDARE 0-11

Dublin picked up their first win of the Allianz National Hurling League Division 1B campaign when overcoming Kildare by fourteen points at Parnell Park on Saturday evening.

Following their narrow loss to Clare six days previously, the Dubs dominated from the outset with two goals in the opening quarter from Ronan Hayes building the platform for their comfortable win.

The second-half lacked any kind of spark as the hosts rarely looked in trouble with Donal Burke taking his personal tally to eleven points by the final whistle.

After a sloppy opening from both sides, Dublin finally seized the initiative in the 5th minute as Andy Dunphy’s attempt dropped short but Ronan Hayes was on hand to turn sharply and beat Paddy McKenna at his near post.

Dunphy gained another assist two minutes later as his pass allowed Donal Burke to point from play before the Na Fianna attacker added a brace of ‘65’s in quick succession to extend the home lead to six points by the 11th minute.

The visitors could have netted themselves two minutes later but Jack Sheridan saw his goal bound shot dramatically cleared off the line by John Bellew.

That miss proved particularly significant as the hosts added a second goal through Ronan Hayes in an instant as he cut inside to hammer home from eight yards following an incisive run and pass by Diarmaid Ó Dúlaing.

Kildare gained reward for their efforts through a trio of placed balls by Sheridan but Burke managed another brace of his own to enhance his team’s lead to nine points early in the second quarter.

The visitors finally scored their first point from play as late as the 25th minute, with Sheridan, almost inevitably, the scorer.

Dublin’s accuracy deserted them for the remainder of the half with Brian Hayes guilty of four wides with Dara Purcell’s 27th minute point proving their final score of the half.

The quality on offer failed to improve significantly upon the restart with both teams culpable of errant shooting before Sheridan, who experienced a mixed night in front of goal, opened the second-half scoring in the 42nd minute.

Burke added to his personal tally with another brace of frees by way of riposte and a second Purcell point stretched the home lead to eleven points by the 48th minute.

Successive frees from Cathal McCabe and Sheridan saw Kildare end the third quarter on a relative high but Dublin managed to finally gain some traction in attack through points from Cathal Kennedy and Ó Dulaing.

The contest continued to peter out from that point although Dublin substitute Conal Ó Riain clipped over two cracking points in added time to enhance their position by the end.
