Wexford is a step up: U21 hurling manager Paul O’Brien

Tue, 19th June 2018

Dublin's under-21 hurlers are hoping they can maintain their winning run when they face Wexford in Wednesday night's Bord Gais Leinster U21HC semi-final at Parnell Park (7.30).

The Dubs defeated Westmeath last Wednesday night in Cusack Park, Mullingar with Donal Burke, on his return from injury, scoring both goals in their narrow 2-13 to 1-3 victory.

Dublin had already accounted for Laois and Carlow so Wednesday night's game will be their fourth while it will be a first night out for Wexford.

Dublin manager Paul O'Brien knows his side will have to be more clinical this time out.

“I felt that we dominated the game (against Westmeath) in terms of possession but just didn’t take the chances when they came our way," says Paul.

“We were well aware of the calibre of Westmeath before the game but I thought that we played well on the night and to be honest with you, we were really happy with both the result and the performance.

“Westmeath beat Wexford at the corresponding minor age and their main men played very well on the night but the great thing from our perspective was that the lads didn’t panic and showed the composure needed at this level.

“All of the lads showed character on the night and I think that the match will stand to the lads going forward,” adds Paul.

“We would be familiar enough with Wexford and their players as a lot of their team would play with and against our lads at third level.

“They would also have competed against each other at minor in recent years and we’re aware that there is a strong buzz around the Wexford senior team at present which could well filter down to their under-21s.

“Of course, we have the benefit of having three matches under our belt while they are only getting started.

“Wexford is a step up but I feel we’re more than capable of taking our game up another level.”
