AFL DIV 1 RESULTS - 20th AUG

Mon, 22nd August 2016

Here are the latest results & match reports from AFL Div 1 games played on the 20th August:

St Sylvesters v St Brigids 20th Aug

End Score:

St Sylvesters: 0-08

St Brigids: 1-09

St Sylvesters took on St Brigids in a rain drenched Russell Park on Saturday evening. St Brigids playing with the breeze took the lead early on and should have had a couple more points but for poor execution. St Sylvesters kept in touch with a couple of handy frees from Michael McCarthy midway through the first half before Lorcan McCarthy scored a soccer-esque goal fit to grace any Premier League game to put Brigid’s 1-06 to 0-04 up at half time.

St Sylvesters, playing with the wind, started the second half well and the pressure they put on the St Brigids side rewarded them with a couple of early points. But St Brigids’ dominance in midfield through John O’Loughlin and Cian Mullins on the kickouts gave St Brigids the platform to increase their lead. A couple more points from Lorcan McCarthy and Kevin Bonner pushed them further ahead. St Sylvesters changed tactics and employed a man on the square to try retrieve the deficit. This was in vain however, as St Brigids controlled possession for the remaining ten minutes of the game to win by four points.

Thomas Davis v Castleknock 20th Aug

End Score:

Thomas Davis: 2-15

Castleknock: 1-10

A wet and windy Kiltipper Road hosted a convincing 8 point win from an experienced Thomas Davis, over a weakened Castleknock side. A steady, cautious start from both sides saw Castleknock kick some bad wides as Davis grew more into the game. A heady final 10 minutes before half time for Castleknock left them plenty to do; Davis striking for two goals before the break. A tidy flick by Paul Hudson was the final haymaker before the bell, leaving it 2-07 to 0-02 at half time.

Castleknock came with everything they had in the second half, this despite losing Peter Sherry and Des Carlos to injury. Points by Shane Boland, Kevin and John Kindlon and Tom Quinn brought the Dublin 15 side right back into contention, and a neat finish to the bottom left corner by Seán Gibbons meant the sides were close going into the final 15 minutes. Thomas Davis’ experience told in the end, and some well taken points on counter attacks gave the Tallaght side a comfortable victory. It finished 2-15 to 1-10 in favour of the Tallaght men.

Lucan Sarsfields v Ballyboden Saint Endas 20th Aug

End Score:

Lucan Sarsfields: 0-17

Ballyboden SE: 2-17

Lucan Sarsfields started off well in the game with good scores from Conor Gallagher & Jack Carey. Ballyboden fought back by winning a couple of frees and good a point by Barra McGarry which kept them in touch. Lucan Sarsfields were up 11 points to 7 coming into halftime, but an injury to their midfielder Brian Collopy and a goal by Ballyboden’s Alan Kerins changed the game.

Ballyboden started the 2nd half very well , slotting a goal and a fine point by Declan O Mahony in the first couple of attacks. They controlled the game for next 15 minutes winning a lot of kick out’s and when Lucan Sarsfields’ Jack Carey was sent off with a second yellow, the game was essentially over. Brendan Gallagher ,Tommy Brennan & Paul Casey got late scores for Lucan, but it was to no avail. Ballybodens’ Declan O Mahony had a particularly good game.

Kilmacud Crokes v Ballymun Kickhams 20th Aug

Final Score:

Kilmacud Crokes: 0-13

Ballymun Kickhams: 3-12

Ballymun shot out of the gates at speed, hammering home two goals within the first 10 minutes, Kevin Leahy and Paddy Small the respective scorers. Kilmacud’s Mark Vaughan kept his side in it in the first with 4 or 5 good frees. Ballymun were up by 5 at the halftime whistle, with the score at 2-6 to 0-7.

It was pretty much tit for tat between the two teams in the second half, until Ballymun’s Jason Whelan secured a third goal for his team with about 12 minutes left. Balymun were unfortunate to not get a 4th goal late in the game, only for a brilliant save from point blank range by Kilmacud's keeper, David Nestor. Kilmacud failed to create many goal chances throughout the game, leaving them at an 8 point deficit at full time.
