Flashback: Dublin v Carlow 2019 Leinster Senior Hurling Championship

Tue, 23rd April 2024

By Conor Martin

Dublin are back in Leinster Senior Hurling Championship action this weekend as we take on Carlow at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Our visit to Carlow back in 2019 saw us pick up a well-deserved 12-point win in our third provincial match of the summer.

Eamonn Dillon was the man who grabbed the headlines, as he found the net twice on the way to an efficient Dublin victory.

Dillon rattled the net for the first time and put Dublin four points up with just over 10 minutes gone.

Paul Ryan almost had a goal himself a few minutes later but saw his effort shake the woodwork. Ryan would go on and pick up nine points from himself.

Ryan and Dillon combined for the latter’s second in the 29th minute to give Dublin a lead of 2-7 to 0-5.

Despite Dublin being in cruise control, they did hit a bump in the road when Shane Barrett saw red just before half-time.

Marty Kavanagh and Sean Whelan pegged Dublin back with scores, but Dublin still had a sizeable lead of eight at half-time.

Mattie Kenny’s men started the second 35 minutes brightly, with Conal Keaney joining in on the scoring action, while Cian Hendricken and Chris Crummey put in notable shifts.

Chris Nolan did all he could to give Carlow hope, but Ryan, Eoghan O'Donnell and Keaney drove Dublin on.

James Doyle did find the net for Carlow, while Nolan also added to the home side's tally, but the Dubs would finish stronger. Fergal Whitely came off the bench and added a couple, with Dillon and Ronan Hayes rounding off the scoring for the Boys in Blue to cap off a fine performance.

Dublin advanced from the group stages of the Leinster Championship and were beaten by Laois in the preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland.
